This musical journey is a reminder that powerful music is timeless. “Music of Freedom” honors George and Ira Gershwin for giving words and music to the American experience of cultural freedom. The performances feature vocalists Sheryl Renee, and Hazel Miller with actor Gary Carnes as Ira Gershwin, music by Purnell Steen and Le Jazz Machine.

A bond was established between the Jewish and Black-American communities forging relationships in the entertainment industry that have long been intertwined as the two groups have pushed for equality.
“Music of Freedom” takes a look at the Gershwin brothers’ ground-breaking folk opera, Porgy and Bess, and its musical impact on the world. Eight of the Gershwins’ most memorable songs will be performed by the cast of Music of Freedom highlighting the contribution to Black-American music from Jewish-American musicians.

The featured performers are among Denver’s top entertainers including Sheryl Renee’s critically-acclaimed impersonation of Ella Fitzgerald. “I never knew how good our songs were until Ella sang them,” claimed Ira Gershwin.
