Shavuot marks the anniversary of the day when the Jewish people received the Torah at Mount Sinai. This is a biblical holiday complete with special prayers, holiday candle lighting and kiddush. The word "Shavuot" means "weeks." It marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot. During these seven weeks, the Jewish people cleansed themselves of the scars of Egyptian slavery and became a holy nation, ready to enter into an eternal covenant with G-d with the giving of the Torah. It is customary to eat dairy foods during the holiday and to adorn the home and synagogue with fruits, flowers and greens. Shavuot begins at sundown May 28th and ends at sundown on May 30th, 2009. (Sivan 5-Sivan7, 5769). Happy Shavuot! |
