Purim is the most festive of Jewish holidays, a time of prizes, noisemakers, costumes and treats. This year Purim begins at sundown on February 27, 2010, the 13th and 14th days of Adar. The story of Purim is recounted in The Megillah, the Scroll on which the Book of Esther is written. It tells the story of Queen Esther, King Ahasuerus, Esther's cousin Mordechai, and the king's chief advisor Haman, who planned to exterminate all of the Jews. Esther saved the Jewish people by revealing the evil plot against her people to the King and the Jewish people were saved. Children dress up as their favorite Purim characters and rattle graggers (noisemakers) at every mention of Haman's name. The Megillah is read twice on the holiday. | |
